Executive Leadership Committee: This committee is selected from our most dedicated and involved Steering committee members. Our leadership changes every 2-4 years and it is our hopes to keep this group strong and representative of the full coalition.

Steering Committee

Purpose: Manage the overall organization and planning for the coalition.

Meetings: Quarterly-  three (3) times a year

Membership: Chairpersons from each of the Standing Committees, representatives from the American Lung Association in NY (fiscal agent), NYS Department of Health (advisory position), health care professionals, managed care organizations, hospitals, non-profit community agencies, pharmaceutical companies, public health agencies, educators, consumers and businesses. All are welcome!

School Taskforce: Ad Hoc

Purpose: Implement the American Lung Association’s Open Airways for Schools (OAS) program in elementary schools, provide asthma awareness training for school staff and promote other school-based initiatives. (examples of activities include: Open Airways for schools trainings, Development and distribution of the Asthma Action Plans, Asthma in Schools staff training materials and presentations, Athletics/ PE Asthma initiatives).

Implementing a new initiative called the Asthma Friendly Schools Initiative (AFSI) created through the CDC and ALA National - to promote Improving Asthma Care and Systems Changes across school districts. Doing this will help keep children with asthma in good control, in school, healthy and ready to learn! Join the project by joining the commmittee or getting your school district involved.

Public & Professional Education: Ad Hoc

Purpose: Develop and implement public awareness, informational campaigns and educational programs for the prevention of asthma, and promote current evidence-based “Best Practices” among clinicians who manage patients with asthma.

Asthma Care Management Taskforce: Ad Hoc

Purpose:  Oversee the development and coordination of asthma care for high-risk asthma patients through a case management approach.  Including an In- Home Asthma Education model, expansion and spread of our successes to new areas and populations in need.

Membership: Open to all interested parties.

Research/ Development & Outcomes : Ad Hoc

Purpose: This commitee is charged with the task of identifying and pursuing new forms of funding such as grants and asthma reimbursement. In addition, the coalition marketing, research projects and identifying/ implement strategies to monitor change in asthma prevalence and incidence data are the goals of this committee. Finally, the commitee oversees and guides the coalition’s evidence based programming and evaluation of health outcomes.

Asthma Quality Improvement or "JUMP START" Teams

Purpose: Target Population based teams with our community partners developing new, evidence based strategies to improve asthma care for children . This can include projects in all areas of concern, including: Healthy Systems, School Based Health Clinics, Primary Care offices, Day Cares, Schools, community organizations and so much more!  We use the National Initiative for Children's Health Care Quality (NICHQ)'s application of the Chronic Care Model and the Improvement Model- focusing on the Data Measures and Outcomes necessary to show successes!

Information: New projects and partnerships are welcome at any time. Annually we have a fanstastic training opportunity that can benefit all organizations and professional individuals. Please contact the coalition for more information.



The Open Airways program at Buckman Heights has made significant changes in the lives of our students with Asthma by giving them the confidence and tools they need to take charge of their Asthma (And have productive and successful days at school)
